Weekend Roundup
Green Heron

This spring season has been so good for birding! The amount of Red-headed Woodpeckers that have been out has been so fun and I’ve been able to get a lot of really beautiful shots of them. The color blocking with their plumage is so striking, and they are definitely one of my favorite woodpecker species.

Another really plentiful bird lately is the American Goldfinch. I’ve been seeing them everywhere and they are so cute and fun to watch. Males and females alike have beautiful yellow coloring and you can’t miss them.

It took a while for the Dickcissel to return, but when they’re here, you’ll know it. They have a very distinctive song and you can hear them everywhere out in the country. I managed to get really close to this one and capture as he sung his song. Look at the yellow and russet coloring!

I’m on the hunt for fawns right now, and while I haven’t been able to photo any yet, I’ve been seeing lots of does everywhere. Deer are one of my favorite animals to photograph, especially when I can get some really close up detailed shots. But equally as beautiful, is a deer off in the distance crossing a creek. While I prefer to take photos that are more close up, I try to remember to find the beauty in a shot that’s a lot more distanced.

Always sprinting through the fields, Ring-necked Pheasants still prove to be a challenge for me to photograph, but I’m always up for it. I just can’t turn down the opportunity to get a shot at a rooster. And double points here for getting the hen in here as well! They are even more difficult to find out in the field due to their coloring.

With migrations slowing down as we head in to the summer season, the variety of birds has lessened but there are still a lot of things to look for out in the wild! I always keep my eye out for whatever I can see, and there is always something out there.
